"I work with this imagery not because I want to be morbid, but because I'm interested in the ways in which technology fails to capture life. I'm interested in the poetics of that failure." - SOPHIE KAHN

Sophie Kahn, trained as a photographer and art historian, has been experimenting with 3D printers for over a decade. Période des attitudes passionelles, one of her recent works, was created by sweeping the beam of a 3D laser scanner across a living, breathing human body. The precisely engineered scanner wasn't intended to capture humans, so when the subject shifts or breathes the scanner breaks down, creating fragmented forms. In the scan, all color, life, and movement, are drained from the body. It's the machine's failure to capture human experience that deeply interests Kahn. (Text by Paddles ON! curator Lindsay Howard)
