Catalogue Essay
French conceptual artist Jean-Michel Sanejouand has spent a career making category-defying installations and objects, each corresponding to a specific series of works. Beginning in 1967, Sanejouand embarked on a series called “Space Organizations,” works that entailed using a specific means to “reveal or correct the meaning of a given space,” for example, filling a courtyard in Sweden with arranged plastic water jugs or a gallery in Paris with metal crane parts. The present lot was created just three years into “Space Organizations” and can be viewed as a more human-scaled extension of these larger conceptual projects.
