The James Turrell hologram In, Out, In/Out, 1994, was the first work
created in what would later develop into an ongoing body of work by the
artist. Consisting of three silver halide holograms, laminated into clear
glass rectangles each with a silver/white flat plane of light with three
different geometrical relationships to the surface of the glass; each panel
is essentially a hologram where the virtual 3-dimensional image has been
discarded.Without this virtual image, what remains is a plane or ray of
pure light in space; elements which have become synonymous with James
Turrell’s oeuvre. The individual panels were named In, Out and In/Out a
rather deadpan description of morphology. The work was intended as an
edition but the present lot was the only set ever produced.
