In contrast to some of the editorial and commercial work completed by his
contemporaries, Alfred Steiglitz’s portraits were rarely commissioned and mostly of
friends and family, like that of the mysterious Miss S.R., believed to be Sophie Raab. The
sitter’s image, shown comfortable and at ease in front of the camera, graced the pages
of Camera Work in both October 1905 and January 1913. Additionally, the worked offered
in the present lot is believed to be unique in this size as a photogravure.
