– By James Marks

I think it’s fair to say that the majority of watch lovers have grown up with Hodinkee. It’s become part of the fabric of the industry and shaped much of the content creation that is produced today. If I’m honest, the early Talking Watches, particularly the first episode to feature John Mayer, played a very important part in my own collecting journey: here was a well-known personality, who just spoke a language that I thought about daily. Talking Watches was a Eureka moment for me and in many ways, like football fans standing in the terraces, it helped me find my own voice. Whilst we can debate whether the Hodinkee of then is the Hodinkee of today, we can all agree that it has led to some very appealing Limited Editions from brands such as Tudor, Hermès and TAG Heuer.

TAG Heuer Carrera Skipper for Hodinkee

The TAG Heuer Limited Edition Carrera Skipper for Hodinkee, released in 2017 in a limited edition run of 125 pieces, individually numbered. Available for immediate purchase from Phillips PERPETUAL. Price: £6,500

Fewer than 20 examples of the original “Skipperera” reference 7754 have ever been found, making it incredibly rare and sought after among vintage watch collectors. The reference was commissioned by Heuer in 1967, following the victory of the Intrepid in the America’s Cup. One of Hodinkee’s alleged favourite Chronographs, in 2017, they launched their own Skipper in a Limited Edition of 125 and although not a carbon copy, it is a modern interpretation featuring all the design elements collectors love from vintage Heuer.

The modern 39mm case features the same iconic faceted lugs as the original 35mm Carrera case, plus a domed sapphire crystal offering a similar profile to the plexi used in vintage models. The regatta countdown features the same characteristic bold tri-colour layout, but in updated 10-minute intervals. The modern calibre 18 automatic movement allowed for the addition of a date complication, positioned opposite the regatta countdown as a nod to the vintage Heuer Carrera “Dato 45”.

A close-up of the bold tri-colour layout, reminiscent of the vintage models, and the colours of the Intrepid.

The chronograph stays true to the line’s historical models – the pops of orange, dark blue and light green match both the original Skipper 7754, as well as those of the Intrepid. Whilst certain elements keep in line with the historical models – for example, “Heuer” is inscribed on the crown, dial, buckle and box, rather than “TAG” – in the words of Hodinkee, this watch was created from “Inspiration, Not Imitation”.

The “Heuer” inscription, found on the crown, dial, buckle and box.

Without doubt one of the most attractive Hodinkee editions, it treads a popular path for manufacturers linking Heritage to an ever-growing client base of collectors who aspire to vintage but look for daily wearability.

Available for immediate purchase through Phillips PERPETUAL, the Tag Heuer Carrera Skipper for Hodinkee dates to 2017 and is complete with all of its accessories. Price: £6,500, excluding local tax.

Tudor Black Bay 58 'Friends and Family' Hodinkee Edition

The Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight for Hodinkee "Friends And Family," 100 pieces released in late 2019, exclusively for Hodinkee employees and friends of the company. Sold recently via Phillips PERPETUAL.

In 2019, Hodinkee decided to create a very special series of watches to celebrate their most important friends, partners, and supporters. Based on one of their own favourite references, the Tudor Black Bay 58, this “Friends and Family” edition was presented as one of 100 pieces with the Hodinkee logo printed on the dial at 6 o’clock and individually named case backs for each of the recipients. Whilst I can’t reveal the initials on this now sold example, I can assure you that the new owner was extremely pleased when he opened the box!

Tudor collectors have always prized these limited series and their scope is quite far reaching, whether it be for military units based around the globe, Ed Sheeran’s Divide Tour, the State of Qatar, Rowing Blazers, Apple (sort of), the hockey team Genève-Servette, and smaller collector organisations like Orologi & Passioni. Whilst this list is not exhaustive, it’s worth remembering that Tudor is owned by Rolex and as such the approval basis is both long and demanding. And maybe it makes this Hodinkee Limited Edition, just that much more special.

The Hermès Slim d'Hermès Limited Edition For Hodinkee

The Hermès Slim d'Hermès for Hodinkee, 100 pieces released in 2018. Sold recently via Phillips PERPETUAL.

In 2019, Hodinkee revealed another stunning edition of 100 pieces in 2018, but this time for one of the world’s most respected manufacturers of leather goods, Hermès. The crisp blue dial, frosted hands and unique numerals are given additional depth by the unusual partially smoked sapphire crystal glass that means the whole watch has the same relaxed, dusky, feel of the early evening.

The Automatic Micro-Rotor H1950, entirely decorated with the ‘H’ motif.

Housing a micro-rotor calibre entirely decorated in the familiar Hermès 'H' motif, this is one of the finest looking editions made for the 'dink and remains a favourite with collectors some five years later. With investment now through the family office of the Arnault’s, it seems likely that this will be the last of the Hermès Hodinkee editions. Perhaps one of the most elegant of Hodinkee’s collaborations, this Slim d’Hermès retains all the Parisian essence of the world-renowned Maison.

Now sold by Phillips Perpetual. You can learn more about this Hodinkee X Hermès collaboration here.
