This photograph was made under Dorothea Lange’s supervision in preparation for the major retrospective of her work at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1966. Curator John Szarkowski had approached Lange in early 1964 about the project, and she then began the process of printing and editing images from her life’s work. Union Square, New York, was featured in the exhibition, which opened just months after Lange’s death and, with 214 images, remains one of the definitive presentations of her photographs.
