Dynamic white lines incised on the surface of the porcelain pot enliven the vibrant blue surface of Shio Kusaka’s (zig zag 6). The energetic irregularity of the lines and subtly ovular circumference of the piece demonstrates the artist’s interest in imperfections: ‘I am not trying to make it wrong, but I am aware that I’m not right too’ (the artist, quoted in Stephanie Eckardt, 'At Home and in the Studio with Shio Kusaka and Jonas Wood', W Magazine, 7 July 2016, online). Born in Japan, Kusaka’s interest in ceramics emerges from her childhood experience watching her grandmother perform traditional tea ceremonies. Extending the influences of her Japanese heritage while reflecting the artist’s intimate knowledge of Western art historical traditions, (zig zag 6) encapsulates both the minimalist motifs of Japanese Iron Age ceramics and the geometric lines of Agnes Martin that permeate Kusaka’s artmaking practice.
