  • Catalogue Essay

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Royal Oak in 1992, Audemars Piguet launched a limited edition ref. 14802 Royal Oak Jubilee for the special occasion.

The reference was made in 1,000 examples as a tribute to the original Royal Oak model. Of the 1,000 pieces released, about 700 were made in stainless steel and of those 700, it is estimated that only 200-300 were fitted with the rare, resplendent salmon dial that has become in the intervening decades, overwhelmingly desirable to collectors. The rest of the stainless steel pieces were fitted with the blue-grey dials similar to the original ref. 5402ST. With a case diameter of 39 mm, the present reference also pays homage to the ref. 5402ST, with one important difference – the use of a sapphire case back which displays the legendary, ultra-thin cal. 2121 with an engraved rotor accompanied by the case number to commemorate this special edition.

Numbered 622 of a limited edition of 1,000 pieces, the present watch is a time capsule distinguished by its well-preserved condition. All contrasting polished and brushed finishes remain intact while the luminous hands and indices have aged uniformly to an attractive ivory patina that compliments the vibrant salmon dial. Audemars Piguet has even taken inspiration from this very model in its contemporary catalog with the ref. 15202BC. Furthermore, all original accessories are present including the original certificate and a numbered octagonal presentation box reminiscent of the octagonal screwed bezel of the Royal Oak itself.

As salmon dials are rarely offered in the firm’s contemporary catalog, and with less than 300 pieces ever produced, this is an extremely rare opportunity to obtain an extremely low production and distinctive timepiece, perfect for the discerning collector.

    Audemars Piguet

    Swiss • 1881

A specialist in the manufacture of complications since it was established in 1881, Audemars Piguet never ceases to impress with a rich history of creating bold, even audacious, timepieces underpinned by traditional watchmaking at its finest. This Le Brassus-based Swiss manufacturer is one of only two major manufacturers still owned by the founding family. Since its earliest days, AP is considered a leader in the field of minute repeaters and grande complication pocket and wristwatches. The brand is devoted to preserving the history of watchmaking in the Vallée de Joux, showcased at their superb museum in Le Brassus.

Today, the brand is best known for its Royal Oak models, a revolutionary luxury sports watch launched in 1972. Other key models include early minute repeating wristwatches, vintage chronograph wristwatches, such as the oversized reference 5020, perpetual calendar watches and the Royal Oak Offshore, first introduced in 1993.
