Phillips de Pury is thrilled to include a selection of artworks from the Susan Goodman collection in our March 2011 “Under the Influence” sale.
Susan’s collection is a very personal reflection of her rarified taste. Over the past nine years she has purchased art intuitively, seeking works based on love and passion and refusing to approach pieces as investments under the direction of an art curator or advisor.
Inspired by her close friend and passionate collector Jay Chiat, Susan began the assembly of her collection with a focus on painting and paperworks. In time, the Goodman collection broadened to reflect Susan’s growing interest in video, photography and sculpture. Remarkably, the very first addition to her now impressive collection, a painting by artist Donald Baechler, will be included in the selection for sale in March.
From the very beginning, Susan has remained committed to supporting the efforts of young artists by collecting and showcasing their work. She has championed their talent by offering financial support and establishing relationships between each artist and the collecting community at large. Susan has even continued her tradition of opening her home and office to art enthusiasts and collectors during their annual pilgrimage to New York’s Armory show.
Susan’s collecting breadth extends well into Germany, where regular business ventures in and around Berlin have afforded her the opportunity to forge relationships with galleries and artists, to make studio visits and to purchase new and intriguing artwork. Susan’s collection so obviously reflects a love for young German art and moreover brings together a highly individual mix of works, artists and countries. Susan Goodman’s collection showcases not only her exquisite taste and perspective; it represents current ideas, attitudes, and movements in art. As a uniquely important part of her life, Susan’s journey exploring and collecting art will be a continuous one and I look forward to experiencing many more of her shows well into the future.
