Zheng Guogu is an avid commentator on urban Chinese life who works in diverse mediums including architecture, sculpture, and photography. He is also the founder of the experimental Yangjiang Calligraphy Group, named after his home city of Yangjiang just hours' drive from Hong Kong. The present lot features a lively collection of text fragments from "Idol King," a popular Taiwanese magazine that covers young celebrities, embroidered onto red felt. Colloquial Chinese phrases sprinkled with English slang promote TV entertainment channels, celebrity gossip, and relationship tests. Although there is scant substance beyond the catchphrases and cutesy illustrations, Zheng's vivacious design transforms these fragments of frivolity into a poignant work of visual architecture upon which the psychology of urban youth is writ large.
