  • Catalogue Essay

Among the artists to attend the School of Paris, Serge Poliakoff emerged with a unique abstract style. Originally from Russia he migrated throughout Europe after fleeing the Russian Revolution and landed in Paris during the beginnings of various abstract art movements. The present lot is characteristic of his individual abstract style that has no figurative context and completely relies on fields of colour. The different bright contrasting blocks of colour are limited in range, but stay charged when juxtaposed against each other. Learning from the tradition of Russian painting and its reliance on intense colours, Poliakoff pulls from the practices of his homeland while adapting them to a distinctive abstract style.
