Lowell Nesbitt

American  •  1933-1993

Biography

Lowell Nesbitt is best known for his depictions of large-scale flowers, including gargantuan iris, rose and lily petals. The Maryland-born artist studied at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and then the Royal College of Art in London before moving to New York.

Even though Nesbitt was frequently grouped with the Photorealists of his generation, his images were more interpretively distorted, somewhat loosely painted and boldly abbreviated. 1962 marked a transition point in Nesbitt's work when fellow artist Robert Indiana suggested that Nesbitt convert from abstraction to a style of realism. His subjects ranged from studio interiors, articles of clothing, piles of shoes and groups of fruits and vegetables to the neo-classical building façades of his surrounding SoHo neighborhood.

Nesbitt experimented with printmaking in the 1960s, producing a mixture of silkscreens, dry point engravings as well as stained glass and etchings while in London.
