Portrait of Jessica (Mickalene Thomas)

Mickalene Thomas, Portrait of Jessica, 2017. Estimate $200,000 - 300,000. 20th Century & Contemporary Art Evening Sale New York.

Mickalene Thomas, Portrait of Jessica, is an excellent example of why I love her work and have followed her work since visiting her studio many years ago. To me, it combines an abundance of female confidence and beauty, amplified by fashion, and an architectural background taking me into the world of Formica of the 1980s.

Richard Artschwager, Walking Man, in the artist’s signature frame, draws you deep inside the world of Artschwager. The work has his signature cadmium yellow illuminating “the walking man” with “scaled” wood blanks in the foreground. Artschwager has always been an artist, who mastered and manipulated our perception of scale and space, creating his very own architecture and material texture.
