Launched in 2020, the Greubel Forsey Balancier S captured attention with its striking convex case and crystal design, along with its unique balance wheel, angled at 30 degrees relative to the movement.

The current model, the Balancier S2, is an evolution of that original design. It retains the signature inclined balance wheel, a prominent bridge on the dial side that holds and displays the gear train, dual exposed mainspring barrels, a power reserve indicator, and a small seconds subdial. However, this new version simplifies some of the design elements for a sleeker look.

One of the most notable changes is the bezel, which now features a smooth satin finish instead of the engraved one (the engraving has been relocated to the edge of the caseback). Achieving this finish on a convex case is no easy feat. The watch bands also adopt a more refined aesthetic, replacing the blacked-out center section with a classic horizontal satin finish. The crown has also been updated with more ergonomic grooves and a more intricate finish.

This particular model is highly sought after due to its limited production of just 66 pieces. Offered in near-new condition with all its original accessories, the Balancier S2 is a bold, imaginative reinvention of modern watchmaking.

Greubel Forsey first introduced this curved case design in 2019 with the GMT Sport, debuting it at Dubai Watch Week. They followed it up two years later at Dubai Watch Week 2021 with the Balancier S2. Made of titanium, the case measures 46.5mm in diameter, and its curvature is mirrored in the shape of the sapphire crystal.

Though the Balancier movement is one of the simplest in Greubel Forsey’s lineup, it is far from ordinary. Its appeal lies in the way the movement’s components are shaped and presented. The angled balance wheel, tilted similarly to the brand’s tourbillons (around 24 degrees), is designed to optimize performance by counteracting gravitational effects on the wrist during daily wear. This diagonal tilt is showcased prominently on the dial, giving it a distinctive visual appeal with a “bent” appearance, enhanced by a color contrast in the lower section.

The manual-wind movement operates at 3Hz and offers a 72-hour power reserve, with a power-reserve indicator placed next to the exposed mainspring barrel. A small but functional subsidiary seconds dial sits near the striking balance wheel assembly. The overall design has a futuristic edge, though it may not be museum-bound, it’s a satisfying aesthetic for a Greubel Forsey. The titanium bracelet complements the Convexe case shape perfectly, rounding out the watch's bold yet refined design.
