Rudolf Stingel: Texture as Disruption

"Both the celotex and the carpet painting see Rudolf Sitngel challenging the definition of authorship..." With Untitled (Topolino), Stingel had the canvas completed entirely by viewers to the gallery where it was initially installed, leaving it up to them to inflict their marks on the work’s surface. Untitled, having been created with a stencil, recalls the serialisation and mechanized modes of creation that defined pop art, but stands in direct opposition to the work of the multiple skilled artisans who used to produce such lavish Baroque and Rococo designs.
