  • Catalogue Essay

In his Deluge series from 2007, David LaChapelle abandons the Pop culture references that had come to define his work and replaces them with art historical allusions that speak to the excess of contemporary society. Based on the Biblical narrative of Noah’s Ark, LaChapelle models the series after Michaelangelo’s interpretation of the story that he painted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. In Statue, Los Angeles, LaChapelle partially submerges a classical sculpture amidst rising waters within a dilapidated museum, supposing a time when tradition falls victim to the changing world around it.
