John McCord, Head of Day Sale, Morning Session, and Rebekah Bowling, Head of Day Sale, Afternoon Session, said “On the heels of Phillips’ record-breaking Day Sale of 20th Century & Contemporary Art in May, this season successfully launched our new sale format with separate Morning and Afternoon Sessions, beating our own recent record. Bidders from 44 countries participated in a packed saleroom, as well as through phone-bidding and our multiple online channels. There was enthusiasm for blue-chip modern and post-war artists, such as Henry Moore, John Chamberlain, Roy Lichtenstein, and Josef Albers, as well as for contemporary artists like George Condo and Damien Hirst. Mark Tobey’s intricate works on paper performed extremely well, with each of his lots in the morning session selling well above estimate, and Shara Hughes’ Sailing soared to $85,000, setting a new record for the Whitney Biennial artist. We look forward to tomorrow’s Evening Sale, Phillips’ final auction of 20th Century & Contemporary Art for the year.”
