Kelly Troester and Cary Leibowitz, Worldwide Co-Heads of Editions said, “Yesterday’s sale in New York confirmed the continued demand for high quality, blue-chip Prints and Multiples, with the auction selling 97% lot and 99% by value. With 93% of lots selling within or above their estimate, 30% of the lots in the Evening session achieved record prices. 92 of the 93 Evening session lots sold and Modern and Contemporary masters were well-received across the board, with all works by Pablo Picasso, Ed Ruscha, Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Miró, Andy Warhol, Yoshitomo Nara, Yayoi Kusama and Jasper Johns performing quite well. Works by Roy Lichtenstein led the Evening Sale with Reverie, from 11 Pop Artists, Volume II selling for a new record price of $275,000, beating the record we set for the same image in October 2018, and Thinking Nude, from Nude Series selling for a new record $225,000. These, as well as record prices for Kusama, Frankenthaler, and Longo, were set in the Evening session, while additional records were set in the Day session for works by Alexander Calder, Zao Wou-ki, Jean Dubuffet, Frank Stella, Josef Albers, Ellsworth Kelly, and Robert Rauschenberg. In addition to a busy saleroom and phones, both the Day and Evening Sales saw strong participation from across the globe, with nearly 40 countries participating in the auction and with online bidders bidding on 90% of the lots in the sale, winning 55%. We look forward to our next sale on 6 June in London which will be a single-owner sale from the archives of German publisher, Edition Schellmann.”
