HONG KONG – 16 October 2020 – Pursuing a series of collaborations with the world’s most influential contemporary jewellery artists, Phillips unveils two masterpieces created by the young, leading Chinese high jewellery designer, Feng J. Encapsulating Feng J’s signature motif ‘Painting with Gemstones’ and contemporary, sculptural sense of art, these unique pieces, Jardin de Giverny and Fountain of Diamonds, have been created exclusively for Phillips to highlight the upcoming Jewels & Jadeite sale in Hong Kong on 28 November.

Graeme Thompson, Worldwide Head of Jewellery, Phillips, said: “We are seeing individual jewellery designers getting more and more attention across the international jewellery market, as collectors migrate towards craftsmanship and unique jewels. Phillips has a long history of working with jewellery’s rising stars, and this season we are honoured to work with Feng J, who is a leading internationally recognised high jewellery designer from mainland China. Feng J brings a visionary approach to creating her one-of-a-kind treasures – the design concept of each jewel inspired by a childhood surrounded by art, her worldly travels and her classical jewellery training in Paris. Her passion and commitment to creativity, uniqueness and the cutting edge of design, match the essence of Phillips Jewels. We are delighted to offer our international clients an opportunity to acquire these exceptional, sculptural jewels that have never been seen on the international auction market.”

Feng J said: “Phillips has an unrivalled reputation for celebrating the pioneers of contemporary art and design and these values are important for me as a young and independent jewellery artist. For my collaboration with Phillips, my memories of living in Paris and my obsession with Impressionism became my inspiration. My memory of visiting Claude Monet’s garden at Giverny came across when I encountered this exceptional and rare 19 carat, fancy light pink diamond which is the centerpiece of the Jardin de Giverny necklace, and the Impressionist effect on this piece resonates with my design philosophy – painting with gemstones. In addition, when I initially saw the 22.08 carat, D colour diamond, I immediately knew this was the opportunity to creatively express my idea of depicting Paris’ fountains in jewellery. The exquisite craftsmanship and one of a kind designs of these two creations are a testament to my commitment to bringing life to the rarest precious gemstones with creativity.”

Designed as a garland of gathered blossom flowers, of the kind that grow in the Jardin de Giverny, Feng J has employed her signature floating-set technique (that masterfully obscures the metal settings of her creations) with numerous double rose-cut coloured sapphires, aquamarines, spinels, tanzanites and tsavorites – in a mix of subtle blue, purple, pinkish, and green colour tones – together with rose-cut and brilliant-cut diamonds of startling clarity. The fabulously rare 19 carat fancy light pink diamond sits at the very heart of the blooming garland. It is a complex creation crafted by hand and requiring countless hours of artisanal skill. The Jardin de Giverny necklace can be detached and assembled as a bracelet and a ring, thereby enabling a modern woman to enjoy the versatility of this exceptional jewel.

The highly unusual ‘Fountain of Diamonds’ ring illustrates the concept of a spring fountain. The inspiration dates back to Feng J’s time living in Paris when she was infatuated by the hundreds of fountains throughout the city and fascinated by the feminine Belle Époque sculptures and the history they represent. The curvature of the water is shown by 95 circular bubbling diamond beads, expressing the jets of water, all set by hand and culminating at the ring’s focal point where the 22.08 carat, D colour, VS1 clarity diamond sits. The sourcing process for every single bead was extensive, with each diamond having to fit a precise size, shape and clarity specification to fully replicate the lively bubbling of a Parisian fountain. The Fountain of Diamonds ring is the essence of contemporary jewellery sculpture, with thoughtful inspirations behind a wearable work of art.
