LONDON – 7 NOVEMBER 2024 – Phillips is pleased to present highlights from the London Photographs auction on 21 November. The sale is led by an exceptionally rare lifetime print of Diane Arbus’ Identical twins, Roselle, N.J., 1967. The print comes to auction from the private collection of celebrated Japanese photographer Ikkō Narahara. The 20th edition of ULTIMATE spotlights Japanese and Chinese photography of the 1960s and 1970s, led by Ikkō Narahara’s most celebrated work Two Garbage Cans, Indian Village, New Mexico, 1972. Further highlights from important private collections include seminal works by Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Peter Beard. The sale will feature ULTIMATE ELLEN VON UNWERTH and contemporary highlights include works by Hiroshi Sugimoto, Gregory Crewdson, and David LaChapelle, among others. The catalogue for the auction is now online with works on view in Phillips’ London galleries from 16 to 21 November.

Yuka Yamaji, Head of Photographs, Europe, and Rachel Peart, Head of Department, London, said, "We are thrilled to announce highlights of our November auction in London, led by an exceptionally rare, lifetime print of Diane Arbus’ Identical twins, Roselle, N.J., 1967, a previously unseen work that offers collectors a profound connection to her legacy. This auction celebrates a diverse range of photography, highlighting the influential photographers of the 20th and 21st centuries—from iconic American artists such as Arbus and Richard Avedon to pivotal Japanese and Chinese photographers from the 1960s and 1970s—as well as contemporary visual artists including Gregory Crewdson and Hiroshi Sugimoto. We look forward to welcoming visitors to view the pre-sale exhibition in London this November.”

Leading the sale is a previously unseen print of Diane Arbus’ iconic Identical twins, Roselle, N.J., 1967, one of the most recognisable photographs of the 20th century and arguably her most famous image. This rare lifetime print comes from the collection of famed Japanese photographer Ikkō Narahara who knew Arbus and participated in the legendary series of classes she gave in New York City in 1971. Because of his limited English, Narahara recorded the classes on audio tape, inadvertently creating one of the few documents of Arbus’ own statements on photography. Narahara’s recordings were integral to the creation of the first monograph on the photographer’s work published in 1972 and edited and designed by Doon Arbus, the photographer’s daughter, and art director and painter Marvin Israel, which features extensive quotes by Arbus taken from his tapes. Narahara also played a role in mounting the first exhibition of Arbus’ photographs in Japan in 1973. In thanks for his contributions, Doon and Israel presented him with this lifetime print of Identical twins, Roselle, N.J., 1967.

Additional highlights from private collections feature works by renowned American photographers, including Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Robert Mapplethorpe and Peter Beard.

Leading the 20th edition of ULTIMATE, a unique platform dedicated to promoting creative collaborations and selling exceptional works available only at Phillips, is Ikkō Narahara's Two Garbage Cans, Indian Village, New Mexico, an iconic work from his acclaimed series Where Time Has Vanished. Captured in Acoma Pueblo—North America’s oldest continuously inhabited settlement, known as "Sky City"—the image depicts two garbage cans suspended in the village square, placed high to protect them from roaming dogs and coyotes. As the key image from Where Time Has Vanished, this photograph was included in the landmark 1974 exhibition New Japanese Photography at New York's Museum of Modern Art and later appeared on the cover of the revised edition of the photobook. Further ULTIMATE highlights include works by Hiroshi Yamazaki, Mao Ishikawa and Fan Ho.
