PhillipsX to Host New York Selling Exhibition Dedicated to the Vision of Bastiaan Woudt
Working Directly with the Leading Photographer, Exhibition to Present 13 Last-Available Works
NEW YORK – 1 FEBRUARY 2023 – PhillipsX is proud to announce BASTIAAN WOUDT: ESSENCE, an exhibition dedicated to the bold aesthetic of the contemporary Dutch artist. Following solo shows in cities, including Paris, Amsterdam, Zurich, and Los Angeles, among others, this event marks Woudt’s first exhibition in New York, a testament to his undeniable resonance in the international art sphere. BASTIAAN WOUDT: ESSENCE also marks Phillips’ first exhibition dedicated to a photographer in its new state-of-the-art New York headquarters. Opening 4 March, the exhibition will comprise 13 last-in-edition works that are among his most sought-after images. Presented here in the desirable size of 47¼ x 35¼ in., all works on offer are the last-available prints from the edition of 10 plus two artist’s proofs. Furthermore, seven of the works are no longer available in the other sizes and edition, making this a unique opportunity to acquire these exceptional images. The exhibition will run through 23 March at 432 Park Avenue, marking an exciting moment for collectors and enthusiasts to experience these captivating portraits like never before.
Bastiaan Woudt said, “This exhibition is a special moment for me to show 13 works that have played an incredibly important role in my career so far and one of the milestones in my career to date. It is the first time that I am able to present my work as a solo artist in New York, and to do so in collaboration with one of the most prestigious auction houses in the world. After years of working with Phillips for their auctions, I think this is a wonderful continuation and I am grateful for the opportunity to show my work in one of the strongholds of the art world. While it hurts a little to say goodbye to these last-in-edition works, it comforts me to know that they will bring joy to the collectors who acquire them.”
Yuka Yamaji, Phillips’ Head of Photographs, Europe, said, “From his highly successful auction debut in 2019 to his world auction record in 2021, we are thrilled to collaborate with Bastiaan on another career milestone: his first exhibition in New York. For this occasion, Bastiaan has personally chosen 13 exceptional images that are not only emblematic of his continued pursuit of ‘monochromatic minimalism’ but also last-in-edition works, presenting an unparalleled opportunity to acquire these exclusive photographs. A testament to the importance of his unique visual language to the field of contemporary art, Cycle II, 2020, now resides in the permanent collection of the Getty.”
Phillips successfully debuted Bastiaan Woudt at auction via ULTIMATE as a highlight of the London Photographs sale in 2019 and has since then achieved a sell-through rate of 100% for his XL edition works (70¾ x 531/8 in.), establishing his world auction record of £60,480 in 2021. The upcoming exhibition in New York will be the first offering of Woudt’s work in the accessible format of 47¼ x 35¼ in. at Phillips. A self-taught photographer, Woudt has developed his distinctive monochromatic style through experimentations in both in-camera and post-production techniques. Drawing inspiration from classic black-and-white photographs by 20th-century masters Irving Penn and Richard Avedon, Woudt aims to capture the quality of analogue photography through digital means. Woudt has published 10 photobooks to date – most notably his 2021 monograph Rhythm, featuring 11 images in the exhibition. In 2022, his first solo museum exhibition Twist was held at Museum Kranenburgh in Bergen, Norway, including Eclipse and Tinotenda III offered here. In the same year, the J. Paul Getty Museum acquired another print of Cycle II for their permanent collection.
