Singapore/ Hong Kong – 5 JANUARY 2023 – Phillips is pleased to present 17 innovative fine jewellery pieces by Singapore-born contemporary jewellery designer Lauren Khoo at the Mandala Club in Singapore on 11 January, coinciding with the debut of ART SG, Southeast Asia’s largest ever art fair. Founded in 2014, Lauren Khoo’s eponymous jewellery line draws inspiration from her major in history of art and architecture. Her jewellery is about timeless evocative design, impeccable artisanship, and her vision to restore a women’s personal symbolism and romanticism.

Cristel Tan, International Specialist, Phillips Jewels, said: “We are very honoured to present Lauren Khoo’s innovative jewellery creations for the first time. As exquisite craftsmanship and unique design are so sought after by collectors looking for something completely different nowadays, works by young and talented independent jewellers such as Lauren Khoo are receiving great attention in the international jewellery market. Phillips takes pride in its reputation as a leading auction house that focuses on bringing works by talented contemporary artists across the world. We are delighted to work with Lauren Khoo showing her wearable art pieces in her hometown Singapore during the country’s highly anticipated art week.”

Lauren Khoo said: “I am thrilled to show my jewellery design at Phillips’ pop-up exhibition coinciding with Singapore’s art week. My lifelong passion for handcrafted jewellery was first cultivated in my youth through time spent with my grandmother, an avid jewellery collector. As I grew up, I gained a greater sense of appreciation for the passion, creativity, and dedication of renowned jewellery craftsmen, during private visits to their workshops. I don’t work on seasons for my creations, and I design based on what inspires me including art, architecture, travel, or things happening in my life. I look forward to sharing my signature pieces with you at the Mandala Club on 11 January.”

Highlights from the exhibition include Makarov Pearl Necklace (illustrated in page 1), which the designer drew inspiration from the painter, Ivan Makarov’s painting of Princess Maria Alexandrovna and the design is Khoo’s contemporary twist of the classical use of pearl adornment. Inspired by works of Anish Kapoor, who is regarded as one of the most influential sculptors, Khoo created the Kapoor Concave Earrings with a Moroccan Zellige pattern on the reverse. Also highlighted in the exhibition is the Gummy Bear Eternity Ring, which is regarded as one of Khoo’s most popular pieces. The ring is a fun play on the traditional eternity band by using specially cut Aquamarine stones meticulously set side by side for a piece of pop statement jewellery. Reminiscent of her childhood and wedding in Florence, the designer recreated a nature themed series titled Chestnut, in both foliate and nut interpretations, and the use of burnished and blackened gold with diamond accents speaks to Khoo’s edgy style and attention to detail.
