HONG KONG – 27 October 2022 – Phillips is pleased to announce highlights from the upcoming Jewels & Jadeite sale in Hong Kong on 27 November at the JW Marriott. Presenting 122 lots, the sale will feature a carefully curated selection of coloured and colourless diamonds, rare gemstones and signed pieces by leading jewellery makers such as Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari, Boucheron, Chopard, Tiffany & Co., Chaumet, Graff, Chanel, JAR and Jacob & Co. Phillips will also host a dedicated online-only jewellery sale in tandem with the live auction, which will be open for bidding from 23 November to 1 December.
Charlene Lau, Head of Department, Hong Kong, Phillips Jewels, said: "This season, we are delighted to curate a highly selective sale to cater to various interests from gem connoisseurs to seasoned collectors, fashionistas and tastemakers. We are very proud to be presenting an exceptional 26.12 carat D-Flawless (Type IIa) diamond, as well as a strong selection of natural unheated Burmese rubies that are highly sought after. As we continue to witness the easing of Covid-19 restrictions in Hong Kong, we look forward to engaging with collectors and welcoming them to our saleroom on 27 November with our thoughtfully curated fine jewels this season. We are confident that consumer appetite for top quality jewels remains resilient.”
Leading the auction is an exceptional 26.12 carat D-Flawless (Type IIa) diamond (illustrated in page 1). Perhaps the most exceptional diamonds are those classified as Type IIa, which means they are the most chemically pure diamonds. These diamonds are the rarest of all, accounting for fewer than 2% of natural diamonds, with historical icons such as the Koh-i-noor, the Regent and the Cullinan all sharing these Type IIa characteristics. The 26.12 carat D-Flawless Type IIa diamond presented this season is a fine example of such top-quality diamonds possessing the highest colour grade of D, which is considered the most desirable of the colourless diamond spectrum. With Excellent Cut, Polish and Symmetry grades by the GIA laboratory and weighing over 20 carats, this impressive round brilliant-cut diamond shares the characteristics of a perfect diamond.
Burmese Rubies
Rubies have been adorned and coveted throughout centuries often associated with power, wealth, success, and health. In particular, the blazing red colour has been cherished in Asia as a colour of passion and luck. Highlighting this season’s sale is a selection of the finest natural rubies sourced from Burma, now Myanmar, a source of the gems since 600 A.D. and commonly regarded as the world’s most desirable origin of coloured gemstones. One of the key highlights is a ring featuring a remarkable Burmese unheated ruby weighing 4.95 carats and accentuated by various-cut diamonds. It exudes a highly saturated red colour and emanates the true glow of a fine Burmese ruby.
Other highlights include a sensational and important set of Burmese fine rubies which comprise a necklace, a bracelet and a pair of ear pendants featuring various oval and cushion-shaped ‘pigeon’s blood’ rubies with scintillating diamonds. When a set of fine rubies are well-matched in tone, saturation, and quality, it creates an impressive and magnificent appearance.
Coloured Diamonds
Fancy coloured diamonds, are natural diamonds that exhibit any other colour face-up. These rare specimens come in every colour of the spectrum, including and most importantly, blue, green, pink, and red. For fancy colour diamonds their value generally increases with the strength and purity of the colour. Offered this season is an exquisite example of a 7.18 carat fancy vivid yellow diamond ring and a 2.04 carat fancy intense pink diamond ring, both perfect for an everyday look or special occasions.
