Sarah Krueger, Head of Photographs, New York and Christopher Mahoney, Senior International Specialist, said, “Building on the momentum of yesterday’s landmark auction, Visual Language: The Art of Irving Penn, which set a new auction record for the artist, we began this morning’s Photographs sale with the highly anticipated New York debut of ULTIMATE — Phillips’ signature platform dedicated to exclusive, one-of-a-kind works. The section opened with a compelling start as Tyler Mitchell’s Riverside Scene from Dreaming in Real Time broke the artist’s current auction record, achieving $42,000, more than doubling its low estimate. Robert Mapplethorpe’s iconic floral photographs also delivered standout results, with Tulip and Orchid each more than tripling their estimates, and Calla Lilies soaring to $70,950 — nearly five times the low. The top lot of the sale, Josef Koudelka’s Gypsies portfolio, also exceeded expectations, more than doubling its low estimate and establishing another new auction record. With participation from collectors across more than 30 countries, these results underscore the continued global demand for rare and historically significant works across the category.”
