Kelly Troester and Cary Leibowitz, Phillips’ Co-Heads of Editions, said, “With 2019 realizing our strongest annual total to date, the market for prints and multiples at Phillips is undoubtedly stronger than ever. Bidders from 6 continents participated in the all day and evening October auction in the sale room, on the phone, and through our digital platforms, with nearly half of the lots selling to online bidders and over 1000 registrants. Contemporary works performed particularly strongly, with Basquiat’s Portfolio I, a set of four screenprints produced after the artist’s death by the estate, leading the sale at $596,000 against an estimate of $200,000-300,000, setting a new record for the portfolio at auction after the previous record was just set the night before. We were also pleased to see Donald Judd’s Untitled set of four woodcuts from 1993 and Joan Mitchell’s Sunflowers II from 1992 both perform exceptionally well, soaring past each of their presale estimates for new record prices. Additional records were set for Joan Miró, David Hockney, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Christopher Wool, Julian Opie, Yoshitomo Nara, and standout records in the Day sale were Pierre Soulages, Jean Dubuffet, Ellsworth Kelly, Kerry James Marshall, Banksy, Vija Celmins, Frank Stella, John McLaughlin and Louise Bourgeois. We look forward to an exciting 2020 beginning with our Modern and Contemporary Editions auction in London kicking off the year on 23 January.”
