PHILLIPS’ MODERN & CONTEMPORARY ART DAY SALE ACHIEVES $25 MILLION

Ed Ruscha

Howl, 1986

Sold for $1,481,750

Takashi Murakami

Together with the Flower Parent and Child, 2021-2022

Sold for $762,000

Annie Dolan and Patrizia Koenig, Co-Heads of the Modern & Contemporary Art Day Sale in New York, said, "At $25 million, today’s results demonstrate the enduring strength of the middle market. With an exceptional selection of works spanning the century, the Morning and Afternoon Sessions attracted spirited participation from collectors across the globe. With bidders joining from nearly 50 countries— online, on the phone, and in a bustling saleroom, —the sale underscored the vibrant international demand for high-quality works. Highlights from the sale included remarkable results for American masters, led by Ed Ruscha’s Howl, which soared past its estimate to achieve $1.4 million, and Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Arteries of the Left Arm, which realized $889,000. Alexander Calder’s Cornucopia doubled its presale estimate to realize $520,700, while KAWS’ Better Knowing achieved $571,590 and Takashi Murakami’s Together with the Flower Parent and Child sold for $762,000. We also saw robust prices for Cecily Brown, Emmi Whitehorse, and Elizabeth Peyton, as well as for Surrealist works by Dorothea Tanning and Kurt Seligmann. It was also wonderful to see such enthusiasm for Robert Zehnder’s auction debut. We look forward to continuing this momentum in our Hong Kong sales next week and in our Modern & Contemporary Art Online Sale in December."
