Robert Kennan, Phillips’ Head of Editions, Europe, said, ““It was a pleasure to welcome our collecting community into our newly built London saleroom as we opened the autumn season with a particularly strong week for Editions. Across four sales, Phillips realised a combined total in excess of £5 million, with 26 world auction records achieved across the live sales.
The new saleroom is an important part of our continued investment in the client experience, offering a flexible and technologically advanced environment that enhances both the in-room and online auction experience. Complementing this, our newly upgraded Phillips app brings our global services and offerings together in one place, giving clients seamless access to upcoming sales, specialist insights, digital catalogues, and bidding from anywhere in the world.
The week opened with our inaugural standalone Modernism auction in London, which generated exceptional momentum from the outset. The sale nearly doubled its pre-sale estimate and set six world auction records, including new benchmarks for Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall. The strength of the results demonstrated the enduring resonance of Modern masters with today’s collectors. This was followed by our Editions Evening Sale, where works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Jonas Wood were among the top ten results, and a further six world auction records were achieved. This year’s dedicated David Hockney auction carried particular significance, taking place in the year of the artist’s passing and marking the fifth edition of our annual sale. It offered a fitting celebration of the extraordinary breadth of Hockney’s career, bringing together works spanning his early years at the Royal College of Art through to prints produced later in his life. Among the highlights was Autour de la maison, été (Around the House, Summer), the largest editioned print of Hockney’s career, created in 2019 and depicting his home and garden in Normandy, which was presented on a custom-built plinth in our galleries during the preview. Fourteen world auction records were achieved across the sale, including two for works from Hockney’s celebrated Moving Focus series, underscoring the depth of international interest in the artist’s work. Sale week concluded with our Editions Online Sale, bringing six days of activity to a close and further demonstrating the breadth and dynamism of the Editions market.”
