Combined Total for The Week: £3,610,065 / $4,847,988 / €4,132,304

Robert Kennan, Phillips’ Head of Editions, Europe, said, “It was a delight to welcome our community back this past week as we began the autumn auction season. Over the course of three curated sales held across six days, Phillips realized a combined total in excess of £3.6 million, demonstrating the enduring appeal and resilience of the market for editions and works on paper.
Our annual auctions dedicated to David Hockney have become a highly anticipated staple of the sale calendar, and we are proud that this season’s iteration was met with such enthusiasm. The sale spanned his career, from rare early works to pieces from his Normandy period, including his A Bigger Fire iPad drawing, which nearly tripled its low estimate at £58,050. Leading the sale was Tyler Dining Room, from Moving Focus, which soared to £90,300.
Building on the success of the Hockney auction, our seasonal Editions sales continued to drive strong results. With 90% of lots sold and 94% sold by value, the outcome underscored the strength of the market for rare, high-quality prints and multiples. Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter, and Rashid Johnson figured prominently in the top lots, with Warhol’s Details of Renaissance Paintings (Sandro Botticelli, Birth of Venus, 1482) nearly doubling its low estimate at £232,200. Strong prices were also achieved for Warhol’s Muhammad Ali and Black Rhinoceros, from Endangered Species. Following the 100%-sold REVEALED: Important Works by Christo and Jeanne-Claude portion of our June Modern & Contemporary Art: Evening & Day Sale, we were thrilled to see another White Glove result with the REVEALED section of the Editions sales. Works from The Frans Oomen Collection drew significant interest during the final Editions sale in London this season, with Rembrandt’s nude etching more than doubling its low estimate, a rare poster from Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat’s seminal collaborative exhibition selling for over nine times its low estimate, and two works by Julie Mehretu far surpassing their high estimates.”
