Domenico Raimondo, Phillips’ Head of Department, Design, Europe and Senior International Specialist, said, “We are thrilled to announce our sale total of £3.8 million, which exceeded the high estimate by over £1.3 million, with a sell-through rate of 97% by value and 92% by lot. The breadth and ambition of the sale captured the global attention of collectors. It was jointly led by Adolf Loos’ visionary longcase clock and FrançoisXavier Lalanne’s iconic ‘Brebis’ sheep – 90 years apart and both marking turning points in design history. World auction records were achieved for Adolf Loos and Elizabeth Fritsch. Lighting also stood out, from the exquisitely crafted selection of Arredoluce lights to Ettore Sottsass Jr.’s ‘Balena’ ceiling light – bold in their sculptural forms and technical ingenuity. Carlo Scarpa’s Ceiling light sold over eight times its low estimate, and the Gino Sarfatti Chandelier achieved five times its low estimate. Mid-century French design performed strongly, with works by Charlotte Perriand, Jean Prouvé, Jean Royère, and Line Vautrin ranking among the top ten lots. These results demonstrate the enduring strength and vitality of the design market and reaffirm our commitment to presenting thoughtfully curated sales that celebrate design’s unique forms. Our global team looks forward to building on this success at our forthcoming Design auction in New York this December.”
