Jonathan Crockett, Chairman, Asia and Isaure de Viel Castel, Head of 20th Century & Contemporary Art, Hong Kong, said, “Today’s record-breaking 20th Century & Contemporary Art & Design Day Sale result confirms collectors’ confidence in the middle market is stronger than ever, bringing this season’s combined Evening and Day Sales to HK$ 272 million, marking the highest ever total for an auction series in this category for Phillips Asia. We have always taken pride in championing emerging artists alongside blue-chip names in our Day Sales and are delighted to have achieved 6 new auction records for artists who are newer to the secondary market. This season marked Claire Tabouret‘s debut in Asia with Les déguisements (Disguises), which soared to 5 times its high estimate. The auction also saw the most online bidders in any 20th Century & Contemporary Art sale for Phillips Asia, with nearly 400 participants from 34 countries / regions vying for different works of art and design. Leading the sale, Liu Ye’s Girl!, exceeded the pre-sale high estimate of HK$ 3 million to achieve an exceptional result of HK$ 7.8 million. The specially-curated female artist’s section across Evening and Day Sales saw 100% sell-through rate as did the Design offering, which marked the first time a single-owner collection - coming from the esteemed collection of Hong Kong collector Kai-Yin Lo - was brought to market by Phillips Asia. These strong results reflect the steady growth of this collecting category across the region. Last but not least, we are particularly grateful to have had the opportunity to support Design Trust with a dedicated section to them, which was also 100% sold, and we are very grateful to the international art and design community who came together to support such an important cause.”
