Domenico Raimondo, Senior Director, Head of Department, Europe, and Senior International Specialist, said, “We are delighted with the result of £5 million achieved today. The prices realised deliver an exceptionally positive message and are a testament to the strength of the market for important works of 20th and 21st century Design. We were pleased to see such a strong result for François-Xavier Lalanne’s Brebis which achieved £378,000 and delighted to see such enthusiasm and depth of bidding for the Hans Coper ceramics which all far exceeded their presale high estimates. The fierce competition shown in the saleroom today demonstrates the demand for Hans Coper’s work and indeed for studio ceramics of that period. Gio Ponti and Paolo De Poli’s Unique low table, which captured the unique relationship between architect and artist, flew above its high estimate and set a world auction record at £163,800. We also saw competitive bidding for Studio B.B.P.R.’s Rare ceiling light which achieved £201,600, proof that the appetite for Italian Design is as strong as ever. As the sale progressed, we felt uplifted by the 329 clients from 31 countries worldwide who took part. They continue to place their trust in us and in doing so strengthen our resolve to deliver extraordinary design and develop this market. We look forward to our Design sale in New York on 7 December.”
