Annie Dolan and Patrizia Koenig, Co-Heads of Day Sale of 20th Century & Contemporary Art, New York, said, “We were delighted to kick off Phillips’ May auctions of 20th Century & Contemporary Art with the second highest Day Sale total in company history, showcasing the strength of the middle market. There was strong demand for artists spanning the breadth of the 20th and 21st centuries, with works by David Hammons and Roy Lichtenstein leading the auction. Josef Albers’ Study for Homage to the Square: Bright from the Collection of Rosa and Aaron Esman was also among the top lots, nearly tripling its low estimate at $844,550. True to Phillips’ reputation for championing emerging artists, we achieved strong results for Asuka Anastacia Ogawa, Ambera Wellman, Sarah Cunningham, and Henni Alftan. Records were also set for several artists, and it was wonderful to see recognition for those who have long been underrepresented in the art historical canon, including Sylvia Snowden, Deborah Remington, and Lois Dodd, whose Burning House with Clapboards soared to $215,900 against an estimate of $60,000 – 80,000. We look forward to the momentum from today continuing through, into tomorrow’s Evening Sale.”
