Lot 37

René Boivin

Magnificent Art Deco Sapphire and Diamond Brooch 'Starfish', 1938

Estimate: $500,000 - 800,000

Lot 74

René Boivin

Art Deco Sapphire Cuff Bracelet, 1933

Estimate: $15,000 - 20,000

Phillips is pleased to offer a René Boivin ‘Starfish’ commissioned for a special client in 1938 after a drawing by Juliette Moutard. This magnificent brooch is of unique design, featuring an unheated Ceylon sapphire weighing approximately 68.30 carats. The limited production of this jewel makes the opportunity to acquire such a treasure very rare.

As part of the Swensson collection, lot 74 is a René Boivin cuff from 1935 also designed by Juliette Moutard with clear references to Suzanne Belperron and her indelible design influence on the house of Boivin.

Also from the Swensson collection, lot 75 features a silver torque necklace by Suzanne Belperron. Belperron’s most celebrated designs are from the 1930’s-40’s. A design visionary, she rejected the finely set pave of perfectly geometric art deco diamond bracelets and crafted sensuous, large scale, bold jewels that were inspired from unconventional places such as Congolese tribes, Brutalist architecture, and Japanese Sakura.

Lot 75

Suzanne Belperron

Silver Collar Necklace

Estimate: $12,000 - 18,000

Lot 101

Georges L’Enfant for Mauboussin

Gold Necklace, 'Cheops', Circa 1970

Lot 141

Bulgari

Important Diamond Necklace

Estimate: $60,000 - 120,000

Many of the pieces from the Swensson collection are inspired by architecture, especially from the Egyptian Revival and Art Deco periods. For example, lot 101, the Georges L’enfant for Mauboussin Gold Necklace, ‘Cheops’, was modeled after the construction of the Pyramind of Giza under construction and is featured in Mauboussin book by Marguerite De Cerval. Paired alongside the bracelet in lot 100, these pieces are from the 1970s when the Treasures of Tutankhamun exhibition went on tour to six countries, sparking a resurgence of Egyptomania throughout popular culture and across the globe.

The sale also includes a private collection of Bulgari, featuring several pieces from their high jewelry collection. From a single owner, many of these jewels were bought in the Milan flagship boutique throughout the 1980’s. This was a defining period for Bulgari as they experimented with modular, bold designs that were a departure from the classic jewelry styles designed by the French maisons of the period. Bulgari jewels from this period are especially sought after as they emerged as one of the most prominent jewelry houses of the time.

This is seen in lot 141, an Important Diamond Necklace set with approximately 70.00 carats of diamond, brilliantly showcasing influences of Bulgari’s modular construction with uniform repeating links accentuating oval-cut diamonds. Lot 140, a Diamond Cuff Bracelet, is another example of this period from Bulgari, set with a cut-cornered step-cut diamond flanked by trapezoid-shaped diamonds and further set with brilliant-cut diamonds.
