LONDON – 16 FEBRUARY 2023 – Phillips’ London auctions of 20th Century & Contemporary Art bring together works by Modern, Post-War and Contemporary masters. Titans of the 20th Century from the Collection of Marcel Brient, two landmark paintings by Gerhard Richter and Willem de Kooning, will lead the Evening Sale. Further highlights by Jean Dubuffet, Albert Oehlen and Anselm Kiefer sit alongside an impressive selection by women artists including Cecily Brown, Claire Tabouret and Caroline Walker. The Evening Sale will be held on 2 March at 5pm, followed by the Day Sale on 3 March at 1pm at Phillips Berkeley Square.

Olivia Thornton, Head of 20th Century & Contemporary Art, Europe, said, “This sale brings together many international names from both emerging and established markets, reflecting current collecting tastes across the 20th and 21st centuries. We are honoured to showcase two extraordinary paintings from the Collection of Marcel Brient by Gerhard Richter and Willem de Kooning. We have a dynamic selection of emerging stars, including cutting-edge works by women artists, from the highly charged Cecily Brown to paintings by Loie Hollowell, Caroline Walker, Claire Tabouret and Angela Heisch. On the heels of a record-breaking year for Phillips in 2022, we look forward to welcoming collectors to Berkeley Square when our view opens on 23 February.”

Site aléatoire avec 3 personnages from French Post-War master Jean Dubuffet is an example from the final years of his life, where the boundaries between abstraction, figuration and urban cityscape became increasingly blurred. Closely related to other small cycles from this period such as the Partitions, Sites aux figures, and Psycho-sites, this work belongs to Dubuffet’s Sites aléatoires – or ‘Random Sites’ – series, which the artist first embarked on in 1982. Works from the series are held in permanent collections worldwide including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Centre Pompidou, Paris and the Fondation Dubuffet, Paris.

Jean Dubuffet

Site aléatoire avec 3 personnages, 3 July 1982

Estimate £500,000 - 700,000

Albert Oehlen

Ascension, 2001

Estimate £700,000 - 1,000,000

Works by German masters include Albert Oehlen’s Ascension. Emerging from the Neue Wilde German art movement of the 1980s, Oehlen sought to liberate abstract art. Ascension belongs to an important body of work that radically developed the abstract language of ‘post non-representational painting’ that Oehlen pioneered in the 1990s. Further works by German artists include Anselm Kiefer’s Walhalla.

Anselm Kiefer

Walhalla, 2016

Estimate £700,000 - 1,000,000

Leading the selection of works by women artists is Cecily Brown’s Skulldiver II. First exhibited in 2008 with Gagosian Gallery in New York, Skulldiver II is a celebration of erotic and painterly pleasure. One of four Skulldiver paintings, a sister work is now held in the permanent collection of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Based in Los Angeles, French artist Claire Tabouret has become one of the most sought-after contemporary artists today. Exploring notions of community and identity, Tabouret shows us a reality that is in constant change, her paintings placing us in the middle of an unfolding and often historical narrative. Painted in 2015, L’Attente is an example of her powerful figurative canvases, executed with a characteristic layering of pigment.

Cecily Brown

Skulldiver II, 2006

Estimate £1,000,000 - 1,500,000

Claire Tabouret

L’Attente, 2015

Estimate £180,000 - 280,000

Further highlights of the Evening Sale include pieces from Loie Hollowell, Caroline Walker, Angela Heisch and John Chamberlain.

Loie Hollowell

Split Orbs in purple, ochre, and brown, 2021

Estimate £400,000 - 600,000

Caroline Walker

Threshold, 2014

Estimate £150,000 - 200,000

20th Century & Contemporary Art Day Sale

Leading the Day Sale on 3 March is Sigmar Polke’s Panorama - Lukrativer Handel Mit Der Luft. Painted in 1997, this work is a prime example of Polke's unique style that blends elements of Surrealism, Pop Art and Dadaism to create a thought-provoking commentary on modern life and culture. The title, which translates as ‘Panorama, lucrative trade with air’, was inspired by a newspaper headline reporting on the Kyoto Protocol, an international treaty agreed by 191 countries with the collective aim of decreasing the onset of global warming through reducing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. The vast size of the canvas and its transparent nature transforms the picture into a wide-angle window, providing the viewer with a privileged perspective into the physical and structural components of the painting.
