Program to Create Alternative Pathways for Careers in the Art Market Applications Now Open to the Public for Fall 2023
NEW YORK – 21 JUNE 2023 – Phillips and Art Start are proud to announce the launch of The Phillips Apprenticeship, a first-of-its-kind program for the auction industry, promoting inclusivity in the art market by fostering a more open and diverse career landscape. Apprentices will gain firsthand experience in the various career paths that are available in the secondary market, while being immersed in works of 20th Century & Contemporary Art, Design, Editions, Photographs, Jewels, and Watches. Apprenticeships in areas such as specialist departments, Events, Operations, Property Handling, and Client Services, will last 12 months and will lead to full-time job offers upon successful completion. Applications are now open for Fall 2023 through the Art Start website.
Danny Arenas, LMSW, Director of Programs and Impact, Art Start, said, “This ground-breaking apprenticeship has the potential to serve as a pivotal moment in the lives of the young adults we work with at Art Start. Our participants are highly capable, self aware, and motivated emerging artists, and yet still face barriers to opportunity that will persist without changes to the arts employment landscape. This apprenticeship will shrink the opportunity gap by connecting them directly to training and employment. It’s an impactful investment for doors that were previously closed to become open and engage young people who have been historically marginalized. At Phillips, these apprentices will have a chance to learn and provide a much-needed, fresh voice and perspective so that the art world hears and represents the experiences of many.”
Michelle Petrazzuolo, Phillips’ Director of DEIA and Talent Acquisition, said, “The Phillips Apprenticeship program spearheaded by Phillips and Art Start is set to completely alter the landscape of an industry that has recently been making great headway in prioritizing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. With the New York State Department of Labor having approved this entirely new trade, we are now in a position to create systemic change by reaching directly into underrepresented communities with opportunities that were previously inaccessible to them. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with Art Start on this groundbreaking initiative, which we hope will serve as a template for other organizations to emulate, and join us in making true change in the fine arts industry.”
The apprenticeship is another step on Phillips’ journey to serve as an agent and model for change, with Ms. Petrazzuolo recently serving as a speaker at the 2023 Forum for Workplace inclusion. It follows a number of internal change initiatives in the DEIA space, such as inclusive recruitment practices and guides for staff and leaders, so everyone at Phillips shares in the responsibility and goal of creating a more inclusive workplace. Phillips plans to expand the apprenticeship to additional locations, eventually making it a global program in partnership with other exceptional non-profit partners in diverse communities.
