Olivia Thornton, Head of 20th Century & Contemporary Art, Europe, said: “Tonight’s sale opened with feverish bidding for auction newcomer Amoako Boafo, with The Lemon Bathing Suit selling for 14 times its high estimate. This enthusiasm for the new generation of artists was echoed by the world record price achieved for Tschabalala Self, whom Phillips debuted at auction in March 2019. We took great pride in offering works of exceptional provenance, notably from The Robert Tibbles Collection, one of the most significant private collections this season, which was led by a world record price for a Damien Hirst ‘Medicine Cabinet’. A number of fresh to market works by major figures were also offered, with Keith Haring and Ed Ruscha leading the top ten. We look forward to the New York and Hong Kong auctions in May.”
