Olivia Thornton, Phillips’ Head of 20th Century & Contemporary Art, Europe, said, “The energy and enthusiasm we have seen during our preview carried through into tonight’s Evening Sale, with bidding participation from across 34 countries leading to a total of £20.3 million, selling 100% by lot and by value. A highlight of the season has been the esteemed Collection of Marcel Brient, with the Willem de Kooning achieving over £6 million. Stand out works by women artists shared the stage, with Cecily Brown’s Skulldiver II far exceeding its estimate as her market continues to deepen ahead of her upcoming show at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. A world auction record was then set for Caroline Walker, with Threshold selling to a determined collector in the room after an 11-minute bidding war. World records were also established for works by Angela Heisch and Sarah Ball. We also saw strong performances for works by Albert Oehlen, John Chamberlain, and Jean Dubuffet.”
