Early 20th Century French Design Leads Phillips’ June Sale
Strong International Interest for Many French Designers Including Albert Cheuret, Daum Frères and Louis Majorelle, Jean Prouvé and Others
New York, 8 June 2023 Sale Total: $2,577,338 / £2,052,327 / €2,390,452
Cordelia Lembo, Head of Design, New York, said, “Works of early 20th Century French design led the June auction in New York, with pieces by Albert Cheuret, Émile Gallé, Daum Frères and Louis Majorelle seeing strong demand from across the globe, with nearly 30 countries participating on the phone, online, and in the saleroom at 432 Park Ave. Spirited bidding led to Art Deco master Albert Cheuret’s "Heron" console table soaring to $215,900, nearly doubling its estimate. We were particularly pleased to see such great enthusiasm for Émile Gallé’s Lotus table lamp, which realized $101,600 against its estimate of $20,000-30,000. The results pointed to strong interest in works being shown in a fresh context, as we continue to introduce new designers and collecting categories to our offerings, as well as sustained interest in outstanding examples of Italian, American, and Brazilian design.”
