HONG KONG – 26 NOVEMBER 2017 – Phillips’ Evening Sale of 20th Century & Contemporary Art & Design in Hong Kong realised HK$119,840,000, selling 90% by lot and 72% by value. The sale saw activity from all corners of the globe, with bidders from 34 countries participating. New auction records were set, including those for George Condo, Henry Moore, Wolfgang Tillmans and Georg Baselitz at auction in Asia.
Jonathan Crockett, Head of 20th Century and Contemporary Art & Deputy Chairman for Phillips Asia, said: “The strong results of tonight’s sale demonstrate the success of our pioneering and innovative strategy of offering the very best works by international artists at auction in Asia, with 80% of the top ten lots selling to Asian buyers. Leading the sale was George Condo’s Girl with Blue Dress, which was bought by a private Asian collector for HK$12,100,000, setting a new auction record for the artist in Asia. We welcomed international bidding for teamLab’s Universe of Water Particles, marking the first time a digital work by the artist collective was offered at auction. The breadth of the market in multiple directions and price points was evident, from emerging artist Shara Hughes to forefather of Pop Art Roy Lichtenstein, and works by Léonard-Tsuguharu Foujita significantly exceeding their estimates. Outstanding results were also achieved for works of Design, with the majority of lots soaring above their high estimates, including a pair of armchairs by Finn Juhl, which established a world auction record for the model no. FJ45. In only three seasons since the inaugural sale of 20th Century & Contemporary Art & Design in Hong Kong, the notable increase in Asian participation reaffirms Phillips’ expanding presence and growth across the region, whilst confirming the Asian appetite for international works of art and design.”
