Jonathan Crockett, Head of 20th Century & Contemporary Art, and Deputy Chairman, Asia, said: “We are delighted to have brought this season’s global auctions of 20th Century & Contemporary Art at Phillips to a close with a combined Evening and Day sale total of US$19.7 million. These solid results reflect the momentum we are building in Asia, as we continue to respond to this dynamic marketplace and the ever-evolving collecting trends across the region. In a tightly-packed saleroom, the pace of the Evening Sale was set by the opening lot, which established a new world auction record for American artist Stanley Whitney. The sale was led by Yayoi Kusama’s Pumpkin (three works) and Léonard-Tsuguharu Foujita’s Fillette aux fruits et au damier – demonstrating our ability to sell top modern and contemporary artworks to our escalating client base in Asia.”

Charlotte Raybaud, Head of
20th Century & Contemporary Art Day Sale, said:
“With outstanding sell through rates of 92% by lot and 91% by value, Phillips’ inaugural
Day Sale attracted widespread interest from our clients around the world. The
sale was led by Yayoi Kusama’s The Thames
in the Morning, with further standout results achieved for high-in-demand
artists George Condo, Tomoo Gokita, and KAWS. This boldly curated sale brought
to the fore a wide selection of fresh and fun contemporary works by Eddie
Martinez, Takashi Murakami, and Ugo Rondinone, among others. Southeast Asian
modern and contemporary art was 100% sold, and the selection of contemporary
Chinese works was led by Liu Ye. Strong results were also achieved for works of
20th century Danish and Italian Design, which hammers home that our pioneering strategy
of curating cross category sales here in Hong Kong continues to resonate with
collectors across Asia.”
