Rebekah Bowling, Phillips’ Specialist and Head of New Now Sales, Americas, said “We are thrilled to kick off the fall season with such an enthusiastic response to works from the collection of Masamichi Katayama, founder of the acclaimed Japanese design firm Wonderwall. The sale began with KAWS’ Four Foot Companion (Grey) soaring to $87,500, nearly six times its low estimate. Spirited bidding continued from across the globe with bidders from 38 countries participating in the sale, eager to acquire these works of contemporary art, design, and photography. The solid results from the afternoon session of New Now underscore the continued demand for works by emerging artists in addition to those with an established market. Across both sales, we saw strong demand for artists who were new to the secondary market, including Julia Chiang, Ramiro Gomez, and Firelei Baez. We look forward to the conclusion of the sale of Mr. Katayama’s collection next month, when his Adrian Ghenie painting is offered in the London Evening Sale of 20th Century & Contemporary Art on 6 October.”
