Jean-Paul Engelen and Robert Manley, Worldwide Co-Heads of 20th Century & Contemporary Art: “The solid result of £36 million is a testament to the continued strength of the market. We saw a great depth of bidding for both established and emerging artists alike, the sale opening with a series of strong prices for young and emerging artists Tschabalala Self, who Phillips introduced to auction in March of this year, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Harold Ancart, and Dana Schutz. There was extraordinary bidding for the two masterpieces by Luc Tuymans and Marlene Dumas, both coming to the secondary market for the first time and hailing from prestigious private collections. In addition, we were honoured to present works from the Collection of Miles and Shirley Fiterman, an exceptional group that we will continue to sell throughout the year, as well as works from the Collection of Alex Rodriguez, and the Estate of Ryan Brant.”
