Dina Amin, Head of 20th Century & Contemporary Art, Europe: “The market for contemporary art remains strong as our 20th Century & Contemporary Art Evening Sale total was up 105% from last year. The results demonstrate continued demand among collectors for great works of art as Phillips set a new world record for Wolfgang Tillmans, and experienced very active bidding as a number of artworks exceeded their high estimates, including works by Rebecca Warren, Keith Haring, Peter Doig and Albert Oehlen. In tonight’s sale we saw bidding from 26 countries, with a marked increase in participation from collectors across Asia, reflecting the global nature of today’s art world. There is great momentum at Phillips as collectors responded to our vision of orchestrating thoughtful, well-curated sales.”

Leading the sale was Gerhard Richter’s Abstraktes Bild (682-4), an important example from one of the artist’s most celebrated series, which sold for £2,389,000 to a bidder on the phone.

Wolfgang Tillmans’ Freischwimmer #84 soared to £605,000, ultimately being won in the room after almost six minutes of spirited bidding, setting a new auction record for the artist. Albert Oehlen’s Abyss also sold well above its high estimate at £2,165,000 and underscored the continued demand for high-quality examples of German 20th century and contemporary art.

Works by female artists performed particularly well this evening, with works by Louise Bourgeois, Rebecca Warren, Bridget Riley, and Sherrie Levine all selling within or above estimate. Rebecca Warren’s Fascia III, a bronze work from 2010 that had never been offered at auction previously, more-than-doubled its low estimate when it sold for £329,000.
