Highlights include a unique Fornasetti screen and Sting’s personal Yamaha piano
NEW YORK – 16 MAY 2018 – Phillips is pleased to announce that the June auction of Design in New York will feature fifteen works from the personal collection of Trudie Styler and Sting. The collection of design objects that they have thoughtfully acquired includes pieces by Piero Fornasetti, Serge Roche, and Shiro Kuramata. Leading the selection will be Fornasetti’s thirty-two panel La Stanza Metafisica and Sting’s personal Yamaha piano. Previously housed in their apartment at 15 Central Park West in New York, which was designed by Shelton Mindel, under the leadership of architect Lee F. Mindel, these works capture the discerning eye of two collectors who have become as well known for their humanitarian work as they have for their contributions to the cultural zeitgeist of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Sting and Trudie Styler said, “The Design works we are offering at Phillips were handpicked with the help of Lee F. Mindel and have helped make our New York apartment a home that truly reflects our personal taste. It has been a pleasure living with these works and we are delighted to share them with fellow collectors who, we hope, will be equally as inspired by them.”

Phillips is thrilled to offer La Stanza Metafisica (Metaphysical Room), one of Fornasetti’s most important masterpieces, from the collection. Fornasetti imagined the thirty-two panels lining a room, creating a meditative environment that could travel with the owner. Fornasetti anticipated much of what was to come in art and design in the second part of the 20th century and nowhere is that demonstrated more intensely than in La Stanza Metafisica. In the space created for Sting and Trudie Styler, Shelton Mindel ingeniously employed the artwork’s ability to define and interact with its surrounding architecture.

Mindel, FAIA, said, “The acquisition of Fornasetti’s Metaphysical Room, was a serendipitous occasion in that the space designed for Sting and Trudie- overlooking Central Park on one side and towards the Hudson River on the other- allowed the panels to stretch along the entire length of the apartment and act as windows in creating a third view into a surreal world.”
