Phillips Presents
Ana
Khouri: Jewels as Art
This September in London
Selling Exhibition at 30 Berkeley Square
Dedicated to the Work of the Visionary Jewellery Designer
LONDON – 29 AUGUST 2019 – Phillips announces
Ana Khouri: Jewels as Art, a selling
exhibition dedicated to the work of the acclaimed contemporary jewellery
designer, taking place in London in September. Originally trained as a painter
and sculptor, Ana Khouri’s jewels are an extension of her art, one of her tenets
being an insistence on bringing fine jewellery into the twenty-first century. This show follows the
success of the first exhibition of Ana Khouri’s work hosted by Phillips New
York in 2018. Ana Khouri: Jewels as Art will
open to the public at Phillips’ Berkeley Square galleries from 17-19 September.
This exhibition of 63 jewels spans 5 years
of work and highlights pieces created during different stages of Ana Khouri’s
career, including works from the Harmony Presentation, Essence Presentation,
and Ethereal Presentation, among others. It comprises new jewels created
specifically for the show, marking the first time these extraordinary pieces
have been displayed in public. With jewellery displays and a special installation personally designed
by Ana Khouri, her work will be presented as a whole experience, including
sculptures created during the making of the jewellery and bespoke flower
installations.
On the exhibition Sarah O’Brien, International Business Development Director, Jewellery,
said: “The soft contours and scintillating gem colour palette of Ana Khouri’s
sculptural designs are feminine, unique and engaging for those women who share
her non-conventional ideology. Our collaboration with Ana Khouri shows jewellery
as an artistic endeavor and design collectible in its own right, continuing
Phillips’ mission to represent the best of contemporary art and design.”
On her work Ana Khouri said: “Jewellery is my medium and to make it, by nature,
is to be mindful of its techniques and the value of such fine materials. But
this is secondary. The feeling I want to impart is one of radiance, in every
sense: That of light, of emotion, of energy and, of course, that of beauty. I
am honoured to be showing my work at Phillips with this exhibition."
Phillips has led the way in
championing the best of the contemporary. It is important that we present
pre-eminent work not only within Art, Design, Photographs and Watches, but also
in the exciting area of Contemporary Jewellery, which represents an important
and growing discipline. Phillips is continuing to expand its place in the jewellery
market, recently appointing Graeme Thompson as Worldwide Head of Jewellery, and Alexis Vourvoulis as
Senior Specialist and Vice President in Los Angeles. With a dynamic ability to
adapt to an ever-evolving market, Phillips builds its auctions and exhibitions
to reflect the most current collecting trends. This unique collaboration with Ana
Khouri will show jewellery as an artistic endeavor and design collectible in
its own right, continuing Phillips’ mission to represent the very best of
contemporary art and design.
About Ana Khouri
Ana Khouri
spent her formative years between the United States and her native Brazil. Ana
has a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts specializing in sculpture. It was in art
school that she first began to think critically about sculpture and jewellery,
more precisely about the myriad of ways that a piece can take shape on the
wearer, and the balance the work creates with the body.
In New
York, Khouri attained degrees at GIA (the Gemological Institute of America) and
Parsons amongst several other specialized studies in jewellery. Her background
and love of sculpture would now play heavily in her favor, allowing her a
richer understanding of the creative possibilities. As a designer she is
unhinged from any technical restraints, and as an artist she is forever
demanding that materials bend to her creative vision.
While Ana
has been sculpting and working on individual projects since 2002, she officially
launched her New York based namesake line in 2013 and it has grown steadily
ever since drawing the allegiance of a long list of likeminded women and, in
the process, has formed a steady drumbeat under her ascent over the last few
years.
Ana Khouri
works on one-of-a-kind high jewellery pieces as well as fine jewellery
editions. Her high jewellery work can only be viewed at her by-appointment
space in New York City or at Phillips Auction House. Her work is handcrafted exclusively
with 18K Fair mined, Fairtrade gold or platinum and ethically and responsibly
sourced gemstones.
Exhibition: 17-19 September 2019
Location: 30
Berkeley Square, London
