Kelly Troester, Phillips’ Worldwide Co-Director, Modern Editions, and Cary Leibowitz, Phillips’ Worldwide Co-Director, Contemporary Editions, said, “Realizing $6.1 million, this sale marks the highest total for an Editions auction at Phillips. On the heels of our record-breaking Editions sale in London at the beginning of the year, we are delighted to see such keen interest from collectors across the globe for prints and multiples of the highest quality and rarity. There is a continued demand for contemporary masters, with iconic images by Lichtenstein and Warhol leading the sale and performing well across collecting levels. A Warhol Liz lithograph that was purchased for just $12.50 in 1965 sold for $40,000, demonstrating the lasting appeal of these editioned works. The enthusiasm and prices achieved for works from the renowned Piero Crommelynck Collection are a testament to this master printmaker’s tremendous contributions to the field. The collection realized a total of $896,438 (doubling the estimate) and was led by Richard Hamilton’s Picasso's meninas: three state impressions, which soared to $187,500, against an estimate of $40,000-60,000. The groups of Miró working proofs and bon-à-tirers garnered the most competitive bidding. Other record prices were set for works by Miró, Braque, Hockney, Le Corbusier and Dine. Our next Modern & Contemporary Editions sale will be on June 7th in London.”
