Sam Mansour, Phillips’ Head of New Now, New York, said, “The middle market remains a vibrant area for collectors across the globe, with bidders from over forty countries vying for works by emerging and established artists alike. Yayoi Kusama’s Butterfly led the sale, more-than-doubling its low estimate, and works by KAWS received tremendous enthusiasm from collectors, who were eager to acquire his works of all media. An untitled work on canvas sold for $200,000 against a low estimate of $100,000 and his Companions achieved prices as high as $150,000 against an estimate of $25,000, setting a new auction record for an example from the four-foot Companions series. We were also quite pleased to see such a strong showing for Latin American works, as we set three new auction records for Cuban artists. Additionally, Beauford Delaney’s Untitled, which realized $150,000, was the second-highest price at auction for the artist and a record for one of his abstract works. With the fall sale season in full swing, we look forward to next week’s Evening and Day Sales of 20th Century & Contemporary Art in London.”
