Cary Leibowitz and Kelly Troester, Worldwide Co-Heads of Editions, said, “A decade after founding the Editions department at Phillips, 2018 marks the most successful year for the category yet. With two record-breaking sales in the spring, our annual total for the year is $25 million, which represents a nearly-480%-increase since 2008. The market for high-quality prints and multiples is stronger than ever, with over 25 new records set in the October Evening Sale and with clients from 6 continents participating. With so many collectors bidding around the globe, the October sale also saw the highest dollar-value of property sold to online bidders in a Phillips Editions sale. Andy Warhol works performed exceedingly well in the auction, with Marilyn, 1967, leading the sale at $325,000, setting a record for this print and any single Marilyn print. This, along with Warhol’s Mao, 1972, was part of the treasured collection of Diane and Alan Page, perhaps best-known as the NFL great who moved on to serve as a Minnesota Supreme Court Justice. We were also honored to offer works from the esteemed collection of Howard Karshan, who, with his wife Linda, assembled one of the most significant collections of modern and post-war works of art. Property from private collections in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles were especially popular with Modern and Contemporary artists, and fresh-to-market groups by Alexander Calder, H.C. Westermann and David Wojnarowicz all generated clear buzz and achieved prices over the high estimates. We look forward to our January 24 sale in London, which will kick off the 2019 auction calendar at Phillips.”
