Vanessa Hallett, Deputy Chairman, Americas and Worldwide Head of Photographs, said, “Today’s sales demonstrated the continued international demand for rare photographs of the highest caliber. We saw bidding from six continents as collectors vied for rare and important images across the 20th and 21st centuries, leading to the most successful online performance we have ever seen in a Photographs auction at Phillips. Cindy Sherman’s Untitled #296, which was created during her 1994 collaboration with Rei Kawakubo, led the sale after soaring past its estimate to $325,000. We were also pleased to set records for photographers who represent the trajectory of the photographic medium over the course of the past century.”
Caroline Deck, Senior Specialist, added, “We were honored to work with Mr. Cohen and Ms. Shaw in offering these works from their extraordinary collection. The sale was led by Richard Avedon’s iconic Marilyn Monroe, New York City, May 6, 1957, which sold for $250,000. Works by Francesca Woodman also performed exceptionally well with Providence, Rhode Island from Space2, 1976, selling for over three times its estimate at $125,000 and with Rome, 1977-1978, also selling above estimate. The photographs in Mr. Cohen and Ms. Shaw’s collection present the many unique ways of looking at the world and we are delighted that they have found buyers who will appreciate their significance.”
