John McCord, Head of Phillips’ 20th Century & Contemporary Art Day Sale, commented, “On the heels of an exceptional evening sale, today’s auction confirms a robust market across multiple categories and price points. We saw a bustling saleroom with spirited bidding in person and on the phone, as well as significant participation online with several lots selling via Phillips’ online platforms. Jiro Takamatsu’s 1997 painting Shadow No. 1391 from his signature series sparked a bidding war to reach $538,000, quintupling its low estimate and setting a new world auction record for the artist. We set two additional auction records for artists, including Mel Bochner, with the sale of his iconic Blah, Blah, Blah, and Matt Connors’ Second Pitch – Shift tied the record price of $112,500 set earlier this year for the artist. Sigmar Polke’s 1975 Untitled also performed extremely well, far-surpassing its estimate of $35,000-45,000 and selling for $150,000. We look forward to Phillips’ first fine art sale in Hong Kong on 27 November following Phillips’ strong results for our 20th Century & Contemporary Art sales in New York.”
